Do You Really Need a CA, or Can You File ITR Yourself? An Honest Answer
Every year around this time, the same question pops up: "Can't I just file my ITR myself? It's just a few forms, right?"
Honestly? Sometimes, yes. If you're a salaried employee with one Form 16, no other income, no investments to claim, and a straightforward tax situation — the government's e-filing portal can probably handle it. There's no need to overcomplicate something simple.
But for a lot of people, "simple" isn't quite the reality. Here's where it usually gets tricky:
You have more than one source of income. Salary plus freelance work, rental income, capital gains from stocks or mutual funds, or crypto — each of these is taxed differently, and mixing them up is one of the most common reasons people get notices.
You've switched jobs during the year. Multiple Form 16s often mean missed TDS reconciliation, which can lead to either overpaying or underpaying tax without realizing it.
You're not sure which regime saves you more. The old regime vs new regime decision isn't a one-time choice — it depends on your deductions, investments, and income structure, and getting it wrong can cost you real money.
You run a business or are self-employed. The moment books, expenses, and possible audit requirements come into play, DIY filing stops being a time-saver and starts being a risk.
You've received a notice before, or worry you might. If your Form 26AS/AIS doesn't match what you're filing, that mismatch doesn't just sit quietly — it often resurfaces later as a notice.
So is a CA "necessary" for everyone? No. But the cost of a mistake — a missed deduction, a wrong regime choice, an audit you didn't know you needed — is usually far more than what a CA would have charged to get it right the first time.
If your situation has any of the above, it might be worth a quick conversation before you file. We'd rather catch an issue now than help you respond to a notice later.
